Kona Snorkel Trips is in the heart of downtown Kona. We launch out of Honokohau Harbor just South of the Kona airport. This small commercial harbor is the main boat harbor in Kona. It is easy to access and has a couple of nice eateries if you get hungry after your Kona Snorkeling tour. Kona Snorkel Trips is proud of our vessel, the Orca. She is well maintained and well loved. When the current owners took over the company, they had her totally re-furbished. New pontoon, new paint (top and bottom), a re-built hull, new electrical wiring, and new canvas. Yes, she is practically new.

Kona snorkel Trips is getting ready to start booking Kona snorkel tours again. Kona Snorkel Trips are getting strict procedures in place to start running, fun and epic charters again as soon as June. The crew and management at Kona Snorkel Trips are working together to ensure everyone’s safety. When you get ready to return to the Big Island will be here waiting with adventurous charters wonderful wildlife encounters.

One of the tours that we are excited to promote is our manta ray snorkel Kona. This is one of the most popular Kona snorkeling tours on the Big Island. This is one of the only places in the world that you can snorkel wild Kona coastal manta Rays. The encounter is unbelievable. Kona coastal manta Rays range in size between 900 pounds and 1500 pounds. These gentle giants of the ocean come into our coastal sites in the evenings and feed off plankton that collect under our snorkel boards. These snorkel boards are guided by professional underwater naturalists. They are trained in manta behavior and give thorough briefings of the feeding habits and life as a manta on the Kona coast. People come from all over the world to witness this incredible encounter. Although this marine life is not guaranteed to see at these sites, we do have a particularly good chance of having anywhere from one manta to multiple mantas that show up at these sites to feed. Occasionally along with the mantas we can witness Bottlenose dolphin intermingling with the mantas. Each nightly Kona snorkeling will depart at various times each night. We run two charters nightly, the sunset and the moonlight mantas. Both are good charters but they are different in terms of experiences. The sunset goes out just before sunset. We can witness the sunset on the way out to the site. We stop for a quick photo session before we engage onward to the manta site. There are various factors in deciding what site to choose for our guests. We put time and energy into every decision prior to the charters. Kona Snorkel Trips wants to give the customers every opportunity to have the best manta encounter and Kona snorkel tour possible. On this Kona snorkel tour, we are in the water for at least 35-45 minutes. I would recommend a wet suit, even in the summer months. The water temperature in Hawaii usually stays around 78-82 degrees. The summer months can get a bit hotter. due the nature of the charter, you’re not actually swimming or free snorkeling. On this Kona snorkeling tour, it’s better to wear a shorty wet suit. When you are just hanging on the snorkel board, laying flat in the superman position, you can get a bit chilly. If not in the water, than possibly on the ride home after the charter. A towel and a light jacket for when you remove your wet suit are just some of the items you’ll need. Kona Snorkel trips provides the mask, snorkels and fins if necessary. Wet suits are provided as well. If you have your own gear, feel free to use those. Kona Snorkel Trips will sterilize all equipment before and after use. Kona Snorkel Trips also sterilizes the boat and safety equipment before and after use as well as before and after all charters.

I know I have explained some of the many Kona snorkel tours on the Big Island. Some may be wondering about skill level. Kona Snorkel Trips require you to have at least basic swimming ability before booking this charter. It is a water activity and requires some basic water skills. Most individuals need to be comfortable getting in the water at night, may be able to swim to the snorkel board and need to conduct themselves in a calm and comfortable manner. In Hawaii, the weather conditions are generally good year round. We have trade winds, strong currents and the occasional rain storm that are inevitable certain times the year. The crew does a fantastic job of ensuring everyone’s safety. Keep in mind the Orca is a rib inflatable. These boats are open bow, center console boats that have shade in the aft portion of the vessel and is open in the front. As an ex- navy seal vessel, the Orca is a stable and reliable vessel. At night, the open bow and a nice way to witness our massive stars and planets on the to and from the sites. The occasional shooting star and name that planet game are fun ways to spend heading back from the manta swim. Both of the manta tours are 2 hour charters. The Kealakakua Bay charter with the chance of a quick whale watching Kona combined as one charter is our longest charter. It runs about 4 hours. When booking you Kona snorkel tour, or whale watching Kona tour keep in mind the times for check in. Kona Snorkel Trips asks every guest to arrive 39 minutes prior to departure to fit them in proper gear.
